Nicole Cherry was a part of the 2024 UBC BMVC cohort, and has been focusing on narrative visuals — especially within graphic medicine — through comics and animation as a way to communicate important issues. Featured below is one of her most recent works, along with a few words she shared about the piece:
“This comic was created in partnership with the research group at the University of the Fraser Valley, as part of the study "Let’s Talk About Pain." The project aims to raise awareness within the medical community about the importance of transforming the language used to discuss pain. By introducing the concept of the biopsychosocial model, the comic seeks to encourage more open conversations between patients and healthcare providers, making the topic of pain less intimidating and reducing reliance on complex scientific jargon.
This work marks the beginning of a series that continues the story of Alex, who is navigating his journey with shoulder pain. Through Alex’s experiences, the comic explores how pain is influenced and processed by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors — a core principle of the biopsychosocial model. The narrative invites readers to reconsider traditional approaches to pain treatment and therapy, emphasizing a more holistic and patient-centered perspective.”
